Today, we finally headed off to further north then even Cherskiy. We’ve been trying to get out there for a few days, but the weather had been bad. Today dawned bright and beautiful, so after a quick breakfast we packed into four small boats and headed off to the Kolyma estuary. This was by far my favorite trip and place. We went up to within about 30 km of the Arctic Ocean. I think we were all a little disappointed that we didn’t get all the way up, but the Sukharnaya river valley was absolutely fantastic. We spent a few hours sampling and fishing in this estuary, exploring the tundra ecosystem and playing in remnant snow packs. More posts are soon to come, I’m sure, to give you more details of this amazing trip. What a way to end field work!
