Recently I participated in an outreach event with Dr. Heather Alexander, Aaron White and Erika Ramos.  Our goal was to expose South Texas high school students to the world of ecology with a focus on the Arctic and the impacts climate warming can have on this environment.  We talked about research currently being conducted as well as the work we are planning on doing this summer in Chersky.  We wanted to inform these high schoolers about an environment that is very different from what they are familiar with in Texas and show them how fragile the Arctic really is.

Many people believe that what happens in the Arctic doesn’t affect them, but just because something is happening on the other side of the planet, doesn’t mean it won’t affect us here.  We wanted the students to understand the importance of the Arctic, and that changes to this ecosystem will affect them here in South Texas. Judging from their willingness to hear what we had to say, I believe we were able to make that point.

This outreach event showed me just how much young students can be interested in ecology.  Many students were engaged during the presentation and were answering questions and providing us with feedback.  Our approach was to present the students a scenario; for instance, we asked them what would happen if permafrost continued to thaw at the rate it is at the present time.  Students were able to discuss how global temperature would increase as permafrost continued to thaw based on the information we provided to them.  The fact that the students understood what would happen  showed me that they understood the importance of our research.

These students are at an age where they are still learning what they find interesting.  Outreach events like these expose students to subjects like ecology that they have heard little of before.  I believe we gave them the opportunity to really appreciate ecology, maybe even peak their interest.  Perhaps some of them will decide to pursue it as a career.  If we were able to accomplish this before our trip to Siberia, imagine the impact we can have once we return and continue to reach out to students in South Texas.

Impactos de Divulgación en Texas

Recientemente participé en un evento de divulgación con Dr. Heather Alexander, Aaron White y Erika Ramos. Nuestro objetivo era exponer a los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria del sur de Texas hacia el mundo de la ecología con un enfoque en el Ártico y el calentamiento climático que puede tener repercusiones en este entorno. Hemos hablado de las investigaciones que se realizan, así como el trabajo que estamos planeando hacer este verano en Chersky. Si hemos sido capaces de lograr esto antes de nuestro viaje a Siberia, imaginar el impacto que podemos tener una vez que regresemos y reanudar nuestra divulgación a los estudiantes en el sur de Texas.
