After arriving in Chersky last Friday I have been going practically nonstop. At times it can be difficult to stop and just enjoy the scenery around you. We have a lot to get accomplish and only a short time to get it done. So how do you enjoy the scenery around you when you have to constantly be moving? That’s easy. Heather and I have been setting up plots which we will implement a simulated browse treatment on later this week. It is about a 20 minute walk from the station to our plots, and the scenery to and from is simply spectacular. When I’m in the field I’m all about efficiency, and reflecting while sitting just doesn’t fit that profile. This is a beautiful region of the world and I would hate to not take the time to enjoy it. So I use that 20 minute walk to reflect on where I am and what I am doing. I don’t waste time, I get things done, and I appreciate the landscape that I am so lucky to be working in.
Now aside from the 12 hour days and going nonstop in the field, I also understand that taking time to decompress each day is important mentally. The fastest way to burn yourself out is to constantly be thinking and worrying about your next step. You should take time each night to plan for the next day, but you should also take the time to turn your brain off and just relax. The other night I had the pleasure of getting to play the guitar with John. That was one of the best nights I have had so far, and after a 12 hour day in the field it was needed. The next morning I woke up excited and ready to go for another 12 hour day.
So remember, be efficient in your work but find time for reflection that won’t interfere with your productivity. Also, make sure to rest your brain from the stresses of work. All of this will ensure that you accomplish your goals without getting burned out.
