Eager for Things to Come

We are so ready to get to Cherskiy. After spending a day in the beautiful city of Moscow, seeing Red Square, and “speed-dating” with the PIs, everyone is excited and incredibly anxious to arrive in Cherskiy tomorrow afternoon. We are currently in the airport in Moscow, waiting to board our flight to Yakutsk. We will arrive tomorrow morning, changing time zones once again, and will then finally depart for Cherskiy. I’m eager to arrive and start making some progress on my project. Talking with all of the PIs was incredibly helpful in helping me focus on what I need to do between now and tomorrow afternoon—at least I’ll have something to do on the plane! As of now, I am interested in studying the impact of inorganic nutrient concentration on microbial enzyme activity rates. I feel ready to start my project, but am reminding myself to be flexible because materials and conditions can change. It’s going to be a mind-blowing experience being in the Arctic for the first time, and I can’t wait to start collecting and analyzing water samples from the small yedoma and floodplain streams in the Kolyma River basin. I think everyone is beyond excited for what’s to come!

    Maddie, I’m glad to hear the someone is picking up the small stream work. I look forward to hearing more about nutrients and enzymes. We have a little bit of data from last year, so we can compare notes when the time comes. Keep thinking.
